5x5 Video Game Wallpapers

Listening to: Nothing.

I decided to spend a few minutes and make some overly simplified pixel representations of video game characters. Yes, I was inspired by Ashley Browning's minimalist video game character artwork. I decided to take the minimalist route and go a step further, restricting myself to a 5x5 grid of pixels.

Make sure to check out the rest of them over at my Flickr stream. Link below.

My "Out of Place" Pieces

Listening to: Az Yet - Inseparable Lovers

Here are the pieces that I'll have up at the Paper Hat Productions gallery showing "Out of Place". They're dual pieces. Essentially you have the original ink work on one side and the digitally colored one on the other.

Hopefully you guys will be able to make it out to the reception tomorrow (Sunday)! Make sure to check out the information at the link below.

Gallery Showing - Out of Place

Listening to: Nothing.

Click to open site in new window.

So! I will be part of a gallery opening/showing this coming Sunday! The theme is "Out of Place" and I'll have a few dual-prints up for sale/viewing. What that essentially means is an original piece with its digitally colored counterpart. It's pretty exciting.

Rick and Eve are the folks behind Paper Hat Productions. They're great folks and we'd all love to see you there!

Thanks for your time!

Background Art - Apartment Hallway

Listening to: All-4-One - Better Man

I did some artwork this morning before work and colored this during lunch. This one didn't take nearly as long as the other one simply because the amount of individual detail was a lot less. I mean, seriously, it was mostly walls and carpet. This is the hallway to Miss Tonks' apartment (#507).

Three more scenes for the first "segment" of the game and then it'll be complete. This doesn't count the introduction sequence or ending sequence. I started to think about some of the different game mechanics I could apply to this game (outside of simple point-and-click adventure gaming).

Anyway, here's some images chronicling my coloring process.

And here is what it looks like in gameplay. Keep in mind the UI holding the inventory and "map" button is still a work in progress.

Background Art - Mr. Peterson's Office

Listening to: Nothing.

I'm actually starting to work on a new project that's supposed to be quite "large scale". I suppose after my quick string of bang-em-out (ha ha) games, I grew weary of the bite sized experience. I wanted to make something larger, so I decided to revamp the Hershel Engine (you may remember its one and only game How Muni Stole $75 From Me) for a new point-and-click adventure starring Mr. Peterson. The game's called Mr. Peterson Detective Agency - The Case of the Golden Fish.

I decided amongst this "large scale" game would be artwork that actually took time and effort from me, as opposed to laziness. I actually contemplated leaving it black and white, but realized that I'd only be boring myself. If not for a challenge, I'd probably give it all up much too soon.

In any case, I've included some images of my progress coloring the first background, Mr. Peterson's Office. I don't have an expected release date for the first chapter, but I'm guessing in a month or two.

Ya, I suppose Josie's right. It does look better in color.

Sample of work for "Game Over 3"!

Listening to: Nothing.

Here's a preview of one of the pieces I'll have displayed at Giant Robot - Game Over 3 this year! I'm extremely honored to be part of this opportunity and to have work exhibited to celebrate the wonderful world of video games.

The reception is at Giant Robot - San Francisco on March 12th. It happens the same week as GDC, which should be very exciting.

Art Dump: Gashapon Shop Game

Listening to: Nothing.

Here's some artwork/preliminary sketches for the Gashapon Shop game that I'm working on. It's essentially a game of collecting cards for the sake (and joy) of collecting cards. You level up by spending more in-game money, allowing you access to more benefits and card packs. It's recommended that you just leave it on, like other silly social games, so you can accrue bonus money every few minutes.

At this point I'm basically trying to collect/make more cards for the game. The content creation is really the part that's going to take forever and a day. FOREVER AND A DAY.

I'll have a demo up soon. Message me if you want to look at an early version to see what this is about.
