004 - Protector Knights of the Forest

IMG_3340.jpg

These are some of the creatures that protect the forest from bandits, thieves, and all-around bad folks. In this instance, they followed Mao out of the forest because he was grabbing whatever he could as ingredients for Sadie Cat (so they could eat and, well, not die).

Basically they're all good with Mao taking the ingredients (nuts, vegetables, fruit, and fish), but need payment in return (yummy food).

002 - Turkey Sausage Patty & One-Deck Dungeon

The breakfast at work this morning consisted of a scramble and turkey sausage patties.
I ate way too many eggs.
Waiting for the garage door guy and dishwasher guy to call. This is the week for installs! C'mon now.
Co-worker Mikael introduced "One Deck Dungeon" to me this afternoon.
I enjoyed it. We died though. Hydra got us. Story of my life, amirite?

001 - Spirited Away & Kelp Crab

The boys watched "Spirited Away" this morning. Oliver sat still the whole time. I've never been prouder!
We took the boys down to do tide-pooling by Mavericks this afternoon with Tim and Michelle. They had us over for dinner afterwards. We had collard greens, sausage, beef tongue, red beans, and rice.

365 - Make 365 Complete

Well, I did it! I was able to create, write, draw, record, photograph, cook, whatever something every day this year. It's certainly been an interesting year, but I guess I say that every year. I don't have any resolutions for 2018, but do like the idea of keeping up on something creative every single day. I may need to refocus my attempts though and narrow my vision, namely on the dream of creating something that can be so mass marketed that I can effectively "sell out". Maybe I can get "Sadie Cat" out there and make it as prevalent as Geronimo Stilton.

Here are some highlights from this year...

  • I reached two years at my current employer. They gave me a nice card and a bamboo pot to grow basil.
  • I had a successful Kickstarter project for my roll-and-write game Honeycomb Cavern.
  • I made buttermilk fried chicken from scratch.
  • We survived the holiday season. It was particularly difficult due to all of the immediate Shens getting some variation of a stomach flu. It was also difficult as we hosted Josie's sister's family, which meant a house full of six boys and four adults.
  • I wrote my first short story (~7,500 words) about Sadie Cat and her adventure with the Sky Tower.
  • I was interviewed on my first board gaming podcast Every Night is Game Night about my game Honeycomb Cavern.

Looks like my vision narrowing will be around...

  • Sadie Cat Stories
  • Self-published board games in the roll and write / print and play variety
  • More print-and-craft items like papercraft or hang tags or something

Happy new year! See you in 2018!

364 - Fried Chicken (f'real)

i attempted a legitimate effort at buttermilk fried chicken. I let the chicken marinate in buttermilk and then dredged them them through a random flour, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and paprika mixture. I didn't really have a recipe.

It came out alright. It really makes me appreciate the manufactured, yet consistent, taste you get from fast food fried chicken (Popeye's, KFC, even Safeway).

I don't think I'll be attempting this anytime soon, but I'm glad I did attempt it before the year ended.
